2009, I have retired. I am leaving the website in place for now, as it
contains much useful information, and it took countless hours to collect and
assemble all of this.

Spyware/AdwareIn general, spyware is any technology that aids in gathering information about a person or organization without their knowledge. Internet advertising (adware) has been criticized for occasionally including code that tracks a user's personal information and passes it on to third parties without the user's authorization or knowledge. This practice has been dubbed spyware and has prompted an outcry from computer security and privacy advocates, including the Electronic Privacy Information Center.
Applications to avoid, and their alternatives: here
Free Spyware/Adware removal tools are available. My favorites are Ad-aware and Spybot for all Windows systems, and Windows Defender for XP and Vista. NOTE: While these tools are very effective, they can sometimes be too effective. In some cases, operating system software can become damaged, and render your browser inoperable. Be forewarned, and use with caution.
My main line of defense is Norton Internet Security, which, in the 2007 version, includes spyware protection.
